Panchakarma is a set of five therapeutic procedures in Ayurveda designed to cleanse the body, remove toxins (Ama), and restore balance among the doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha). It is a deep detoxification and rejuvenation process that helps in the prevention and treatment of various diseases, including infertility, digestive disorders, skin problems, and mental health issues.
The Five Main Panchakarma Therapies
Vamana (Therapeutic Emesis) – Induced Vomiting
- Used to remove excess Kapha dosha from the body.
- Beneficial for asthma, allergies, obesity, chronic colds, and skin diseases.
- Herbal decoctions and medicated milk or ghee are given to induce controlled vomiting.
Virechana (Purgation Therapy) – Induced Purgation
- Eliminates excess Pitta dosha through controlled bowel cleansing.
- Effective for liver disorders, skin diseases, chronic fevers, and acidity.
- Herbal laxatives like Triphala, castor oil, and Ayurvedic formulations are used.
Basti (Medicated Enema) – Colon Cleansing
- Removes excess Vata dosha, which governs movement and the nervous system.
- Useful for infertility, arthritis, constipation, neurological disorders, and hormonal imbalances.
- Medicated oils, herbal decoctions, or ghee are introduced into the rectum.
Nasya (Nasal Therapy) – Cleansing the Sinuses
- Clears toxins from the head, neck, and nervous system.
- Treats sinusitis, migraines, headaches, hormonal issues, and anxiety.
